Board Meeting The Board met prior to the quarterly meeting. The following were present: James Novak, Denise Demars, Jeffrey Schadegg, Charlie OBrien, Bruce Lilleold, John Piper. The board acted to purchase a General Liability Insurance Policy issued with Western National Mutual Insurance Company. Thank you to Bruce Lillevold for doing the leg work on this project. Motion by Demars, seconded by Piper to approve purchase. Passed. Charlie O'Brien reviewed the transaction reports. Motion by DeMars, seconded by Piper to approve transactions. Passed Jeff Schadegg reviewed the Executive Director's report. Motion by Lillevold, seconded by Demars to accept the report and approve the recommendations contained therein. Passed (Schadegg abstained) Quarterly Meeting A moment of silence was called for by president Novak in honor of those who died in the September 11 attacks by terrorists on the World Trade Center in New York. Our condolences to all those who have lost loved ones and associates in this senseless and cowardly act. Minutes Approved Per Newsletter Motion by Neudahl, seconded by Washinger to approve the minutes of June 12, 2001 as published in the news letter. Motion Passed. Treasurers Report Motion by DeMars, seconded by Felsch to approve the Treasurers report as published in the newsletter. Motion Passed. Arson Awareness Committee - No report Arson Reward Committee- Committee Chair Charlie OBrien reported that there were no reward applications received so far this summer. More signs have been purchased and can be obtained by calling Charlie. Banners are still available and we will be ordering more. Charlie asked if a sign order form could be added to the web site. Jeff will work on it. Budget and Finance Committee Charlie O'Brien reported that the Chapter now has a computer for the Treasurer donated by State Farm Insurance. He will work with the Executive Director to get the Quicken files onto it so that he can prepare a budget for the annual meeting. Training and Education Committee Schadegg reported for Don Howell that we are moving along on schedule with conference plans. We are in the process of getting final commitments from speakers. Dates are March 27, 28 and 29, 2002. Mark your calendar. Awards Committee Schadegg reported for Nathan Kreye that no nominations have been received for this year. We will be adding the awards information and forms to the web site in December to make nominations easier. Certification Committee Novak reported that forms and information can be obtained form Marsha in the International Office. Roger Jemmings gives the test. HazMat / OSHA No date has been set for the either the 40 hour or refresher. Let Jeff Schadegg know if you need one or the other. We are keeping a list so that we can track our membership's needs. Newsletter Editor Report Remember the Chapter's primary communication method is now e-mail. If you do not have an address listed with the Chapter send a message to jschadegg@mediaone.net so that we can add you to the list. Your e-newsletter is also in color.District Meetings Some Districts are doing wonderful while others are floundering. Let the board know what the Chapter can do to help in your Districts. Talk it up and bring a new person to the meeting. Remember although not required, the plan is to get those attending the District meetings to actual join the association. If you attend and are not a member, ask your District Director for an application. Merchandise Committee No report Membership Committee Membership Committee Chair Denise Demars presented six new applications. Motion by Wiestling, seconded by Lillevold to approve applicants for membership. Motion passed. Governors Council Report Bruce Lillevold is our representative. Bruce reported Governor's day at the Fair was very successful. The Lt. Governor made an appearance. There were 8 different fire messages highlighted include Arson Awareness. Bruce reminds us that a whole day at the Fair is a definite accomplishment. There are many groups that want their day at the Fair and are passed over. We have one and it looks like we in to stay. State Fire Marshals Report State Fire Marshal Tom Brace commented that there have been 23 fire deaths in the State to date. Of the causes one is suspicious and four are undetermined at this time. Fire Marshal Brace outlined the membership of the Arson Strike Force in Minnesota and discussion followed regarding legislation. As a result of gasoline concerns around the State it has been reported that people are hoarding fuel. Be aware of this and if questioned please spread the message that there is no shortage and no reason to change our buying habits. Jeff Howe asked Fire Marshal Brace how the looming strike will affect service. Fire Marshal Brace responded that the decision to strike is a personal one and that employees have the right to strike if they decided to. They should also have the right to work they desire to. The State Fire Marshal Division will do their best to provide services what ever happens. Ethics Committee No report Legislative Committee Chair Denise DeMars reported there will be nothing happening until January. She also commented that the Arson Pointer System is not be used and urged members to utilize it. NFPA 921 Committee No report Old Business Jamie asked Denise DeMars what the status if the Private Investigator's was. She referred him to Robert Schroeder who was not present at the meeting. President Novak reported on the gas explosion project. They had a tough time but got good data. Now they will be working to compile the data and produce a video program to report the results. President Novak commented that we are still looking for structures to do burn tests. Multi-unit buildings with many similar rooms are desired. Let him know if you have anything coming up. President Novak reported that the Chapter now has General Liability Insurance. President Novak brought up the statewide need for an Arson Dog. It doesn't look like the State will be getting one. Several local Department are applying. President Novak asked if anyone is interested in Chairing the Arson Awareness Committee. Contact him if you would like to volunteer or have suggestions on who he should appoint. New Business Denise DeMars reported the Chapter is now a member of the Minnesota 100 Club.
